Pet Safety

Protecting Our Furry Loved Ones – and the Furless Ones Too!

Our pets are our family, and just like any family member we would do anything to protect them. With the rise of animal theft, over 2 million pets are stolen every year, one should always take extra precautions in protecting their "furbabies."

Keep Your Pets Inside: The best way to protect your pets from theft is by keeping them indoors. Typically when pets are outdoor animals, the owner does not know when their pet goes missing, if it was stolen or ran away from the yard. Additionally, having a pet that is constantly outdoors will lead them to suffer from horrendous weather. It will also promote problematic behavior, such as excessive barking. If by chance it is necessary for a pet to be outside make sure that they have proper identification as well as sturdy gate so they cannot escape. Remember that certain holidays can be specially stressful on your furry friends: fireworks can scare and disorient animals, prompting them to escape.

GPS Tracking: Let's face it: most of us have had a dog, cat, bunny (you name it!) who ran away. These times can be stressful and worrisome. The easiest way to track down your dog when it does run away is to have a GPS device somewhere on it, preferably its collar. By having your pet activity recorded it is easy to monitor them and quickly locate them, should they ever decide to explore.

Horse Surveillance: Monitoring horses with surveillance is becoming more and more popular. A typical race horse cost $60,000 a year to care for. Because horses are so costly they need to be monitored 24/7 to make sure they are in great health as well as to be protected from theft. Additionally, it’s always a great idea to know that your horse keeper, as well as anyone trusted with caring for your pets, is treating them in the way you expect.

Don’t wait until an escape happens, or worse: you notice signs of abuse by a caretaker. Keep your furry family members safe, happy, and healthy!
